Most investment options today, whether in public markets or private markets, are built around interest-based debt, financial engineering, or passive exposure.
Even many modern halal investment platforms rely on screening standards that may permit some interest-based debt or non-permissible revenue.
In private markets, the compromises often look different: leveraged acquisitions, preferred-return structures, speculative upside, minority positions, or limited control over the underlying business.

Caterpillar ($CAT) stock

According to AAOIFI and most other screenings (FTSE, S&P, MSCI, etc.), Caterpillar stock is "halal compliant" because the total debt and haram revenue ratios fall below the arbitrary 30% and 5% haram thresholds, respectively.
Additionally, AAOIFI does not screen out Caterpillar, even though its products are weaponized for the Israeli military, being used in home demolitions, illegal settlement construction, and military assaults against Palestinian citizens.
If tens of billions in riba and material complicity in oppression are acceptable as long as ratios pass, "halal compliance" becomes just a label.
